12 Must-Remember Things For Your New Apartment

But have you thought about whether you have everything you need?

If not, check out the handy checklist below and see what you have covered.

1. The essentials

Think toilet paper and paper towels.

How about trash bags? You’ll likely need big ones for all the packing materials, medium-sized bags for the kitchen, and smaller ones for the bathroom(s) and bedroom(s).

Consider creating an “Essential Bag” that can help last you for the first few days while you unpack, including:

  • Clothes for week
  • Toilet paper
  • Paper towels
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Soap
  • Shampoo
  • Towels
  • Charger
  • Shower curtain
  • Shower curtain liner
  • Shower rings

2. Household cleaning products

You’ll also want some vital home cleaning supplies, such as an all-purpose cleaner, sponges, cloths and scouring pads. Plus, you’ll likely need a vacuum cleaner, broom, dustpan and brush.

3. Storage bins and organizers

Once you move into your new home, you’ll have a lot of belongings to put away. Do you know where they are going to go?

If you have a small apartment, you need to use space as efficiently as possible. You also want to find what you need quickly.

So you’ll likely need organization products for your apartment such as drawer dividers for your utensils. Plus, you may want containers to corral food in your cabinets and a spice rack.

There are many more ways to round up your possessions, free up space and keep your apartment organized.

Bonus Tip: Make sure items you need the first few days are easily accessible. If they are in boxes, clearly label them on all sides. Consider color coding by room to make the unpacking process easier. Imagine if all boxes with a blue label were your master bedroom and all the green labels were for your kitchen. Now that’s organization.

4. Lamps and lighting

Most apartments’ lighting is limited to a ceiling light in the middle of the main rooms, if at all. Thus, you likely need some lamps to place on side tables in the living room and bedroom, floor lamps and if you have a desk, desk lamps.

5. Extension cords

You’ll likely need some extension cords for lighting, vacuuming and more. You may need extension cords because of the distance away from the outlet or simply because there are not enough prongs.

6. Bedding

Don’t forget about the bedding. Having two sets of sheets can be very helpful so that you can wash one and still use the other.

7. Window treatments

You’ll want some privacy in your new home. So, it’s a good idea to have some window treatments on hand if your landlord allows them. Store-bought drapes can do the job. They are relatively inexpensive if you shop at outlets such as Overstock.com, Home Depot, Ikea or Bed, Bath and Beyond. Look for the sales!

8. Laundry supplies and basket

Your laundry will probably pile up quickly. So buy a laundry basket or bag, especially if you’re using shared laundry facilities. Have some laundry detergent available as well as quarters to feed the washer and dryer.

9. Furniture

Do you have the furniture you need in your new apartment? Have you properly laid out the furniture to see what will fit?

Plus, if this is the first time you have had a balcony, you may not have the right furniture to enjoy it. While it’s not a day one or even week one necessity, if the weather is outdoor-friendly, you might want to invest in an outdoor table and chairs.

10. Toolbox

If you’re handy, a toolbox can be very useful for hanging those pictures or putting together that furniture. Also, think about getting extra batteries for your common devices and keeping them stored.

11. Kitchenware

Don’t forget the plates, bowls, cups, napkins, pots and pans. These will be needed.

12. Snacks and food

If friends and family are helping you to move, you’ll want to have some snacks and drinks available to keep everyone well hydrated and full of energy. Plus, it’s just a small thank you for their time helping you.

Also, while you might be able to order takeout for lunch or dinner, consider buying some easy breakfast foods, such as cereal and milk or pastries for your first morning in your new apartment.

Review this list before you make your move, and you’ll be sure to avoid some of those frustrating “Oh, I forgot about that” moments.
