But, to take advantage of Section 8 benefits you must apply first. So, where do you start to apply for Section 8?
Apply at the local level
The Section 8 program is fueled by local, municipal offices called Public Housing Authorities. These municipal offices help gauge the local rental market and handle day-to-day operations to ensure the program’s success.
This is where you will go to apply initially.
Prepare for an interview
Upon completing and submitting your application, you’ll be contacted to setup an interview. The interview will be conducted by the local Public Housing Authority and could take place in your home or in the local office.
The primary purpose of the interview is to confirm your eligibility for Section 8 benefits.
Because of this, you need to be sure that you have your documentation ready. The Public Housing Authority interviewer may ask to see it the day of the interview and you may need to provide it later, as well.
You can find information about the necessary documentation from your local Public Housing Authority as precedence may vary from one location to another.
Find an eligible residence
Asking how to apply for Section 8 housing is not enough – you also need to be ready to find an eligible Section 8 apartment if you’re granted a voucher.
When you receive the voucher, you have 90 days to find a safe, sanitary apartment. The apartment will have to pass an inspection. And keep in mind, not all complexes will accept Section 8 housing benefits, so you’ll need to confirm that with the property manager.
