Sometimes, you do things that you don’t even realize are annoying. But fear not! We’ve compiled a list of things you should avoid doing so you can keep the peace in your home.
1. Leaving your stuff everywhere
This one is easy to do as it requires almost no effort on your part. When you come home, you might take off your shoes in the middle of the entryway, throw your jacket in the middle of the couch and let your books pile up on the kitchen table.
After a few days, there will be no doubt that you live there because your stuff will be all over the place and most likely in the way. Keep your personal belongings where they belong – in your room and out of the way of your roommates.
2. Never washing your dishes
Few things are more disgusting than a sink full of days-old dirty dishes. It’s even more disgusting when you leave dirty dishes out – on the kitchen counters, on the coffee table or under the couch. Not only does it look bad, but it attracts bugs and mice, which likely will annoy you just as much as it does your roommate.
3. Not cleaning common areas
Your roommate will likely expect you to do some cleaning in the shared spaces of your place like vacuuming or wiping down the kitchen table and counters. It’s bad enough to leave your personal belongings out, but it’s even worse when you don’t help clean. At this point, your roommate will have only two choices – live in the mess waiting for you to clean or cleaning it all themselves. Either way, it’s won’t be fun for them.
4. Being too loud
Sleep is essential for any human to behave and operate normally. If one doesn’t get enough sleep, they’re likely going to be grumpy, irritable and dysfunctional. If you decide to have a noisy get-together while your roommate is trying to rest, they’re sure to be upset. You don’t even need people to make too much noise. Be aware of the volume on the tv, your stereo and your voice on the phone – all of these could disturb your roommate’s peaceful slumber.
5. Not flushing the toilet
It’s such a small, simple task, which is why it can be so annoying – and gross. If your roommate ever has friends over, they too will likely be disgusted by this. There’s no need to explain further. No one wants to see your business, so flush it goodbye.
6. Eating their food without asking
Especially if you eat the expensive stuff. Like sleep, food is necessary for survival. Without it, one can become particularly enraged, or hangry. Your roommate will be quite upset when they want to binge eat a carton of ice cream and a box of Twinkies after a long day and come home to an empty container of their favorite dessert.
Likewise, if you share food, don’t devour all of it before they’ve had a chance to enjoy some, as well. And if you’re craving just won’t quit, hit the grocery store on your way home to replace what you’ve taken.
Just remember the golden rule – treat others as you want to be treated and you can live in harmony. Most of the time.
