3 Things to Know About Roommates

A roommate is someone with whom you share your living space. There are lots of reasons you might want a roommate — to help with finances, for safety or even just to have someone to chat with every so often at home.

1. A roommate shares the rent payment

One benefit of having a roommate is that they’ll pay for part of the rent, leaving you with less to pay. This can make living in a rental much cheaper for both of you and you may even be able to afford a larger rental unit with more space to share.

2. A roommate can be someone you don’t know

Just because you’re living with someone doesn’t mean you need to know them before you move into the same house. If you don’t have a friend to live with, you can seek out a roommate in various ways. Just make sure you take safety precautions when searching to avoid potentially bad situations.

3. A roommate can make your living situation safer

Living alone can be a risk sometimes, especially if you live in a particularly uncrowded area or don’t know a lot of the people that live near you. Having a roommate can make your living situation a little safer. It may even help prevent break-ins as there’s a better chance that either your or your roommate is home and the house isn’t left empty as often.

Do you want a roommate?

While roommates can make your home safer and more affordable, you’ll still be sharing your rental with someone else, or even a few other roommates, and you won’t have quite as much privacy. Think about if you want to share your space and if it’s worth the price to you. Not everyone wants a roommate, but for some people, it’s nice to have one.
